🌀 Planning Season Alert 🌀 - Continuous Planning

Every year the forecast is the same, and every year it catches us by surprise. Planning season is coming, and last year's “never again” is forgotten.
Like clockwork, the organization stops what it is doing. Executives, finance, strategy and portfolio teams set aside their day jobs to build spreadsheets, decks and business cases, and spend weeks negotiating budgets. By the end they are exhausted, vow it will be different next time, and forget how painful it was until the next planning season arrives.

The pain is only half the problem. The annual cycle also narrows our focus to a single fiscal year, once a year. The plan is a snapshot of what we believed at the time, but the market, the strategy and the opportunities do not follow the fiscal calendar. By the time it is approved, it is already aging.
None of this is finance's fault. The annual cycle was built for stability and refined over many years, and continuous planning makes it more accurate, not obsolete. But many organizations end up running the annual process more often while calling it continuous.
That is the heart of Principle 6 of the 10 Key Principles of Strategy Execution, Continuously Optimize the Strategic Roadmap. Instead of an annual event, the organization maintains a multi-year rolling plan with a direct line of sight between strategy and all investments, operational and discretionary, in flight and new. The core strategic bets stay stable while the sequencing of investments adapts around them. The annual plan simply becomes a snapshot of that rolling plan, the same effort as any other regular review, not an event that stops the business.
Finance is central to making that transition. Principle 7, Make Financial Data Integral to Strategy Execution, puts financial data to work inside that rhythm, so funding, forecasts and investment decisions move with the rolling plan instead of waiting for the next annual cycle. Finance owns the budgeting and forecasting foundations everyone depends on, which makes it a key partner in moving from annual to continuous planning.
The 10 Key Principles aren’t something we came up with on our own. They’re being defined in the open by the StrategyXF community, multi-disciplinary leaders and practitioners across Strategy, Operations, Finance, HR, Architecture, Transformation, PMO, Delivery, and Change Management, naming the real challenges holding organizations back and sharing what’s actually worked.

StrategyXF Painfully Accurate Series (Sad, but True!)
This cartoon is part of Painfully Accurate, a StrategyXF series built from real Strategy Execution challenges our members have actually lived through, laughed about, and found a way past.
Every scene started as something a leader or practitioner described, not a hypothetical, an actual moment somebody in this community said out loud and everyone else in the room recognized instantly. Sad but true, every one of them, and every one of them survivable.
If any of this feels a little too familiar, you're exactly who this community was built for. Join StrategyXF and help us turn these shared war stories into the practical, personalized strategies that finally put them behind us.
