Thursday Think Tank Session 24: Using AI to Give Every Team a North Star | Translating and Communicating Strategic Direction

Using AI to Give Every Team a North Star | Translating and Communicating Strategic Direction
Session 24 opened the new AI enabling series by asking how AI can extend each part of Principle 3, translate and communicate strategic direction. Led by Kalina Nikolova with Alex Lee of Cascade, the community looked at where AI helps with defining, translating and sustaining alignment, and where people still have to own the judgment calls.
Kalina set out the three parts of the principle and how AI can support each, Alex shared the innovator view on data foundations and keeping humans in the loop, and the discussion that followed covered repetition and channels, translating the impact rather than the vision, and the limits of AI listening across the organization.

Session Agenda
Welcome and Context: Ben introduced Principle 3 and a new format that pairs a practitioner with a product innovator, to explore how AI can extend the principle and where it should not.
How AI Extends Principle 3: Kalina Nikolova walked through securing C-suite alignment, translating across business units and sustaining alignment through communication.
Foundations, Context and Humans in the Loop: Alex Lee of Cascade shared why data foundations decide what AI produces, and why the owner of the strategy stays in control of the story.
Where a Platform Fits: Questions on data sensitivity and when a platform comes into play, with Ben connecting Principle 3 to Principles 6 and 9.
Open Discussion: Repetition and channels, translating the impact rather than the vision, process and knowledge maturity, listening across the organization, and how democratic the vision should be.
"The real power of AI is going to be the specific applications of AI to specific problem statements." The idea behind pairing practitioners with innovators in the AI series, and Ben Chamberlain, on why the series balances industry leaders with the product companies innovating in the space
Key Takeaways
AI is more than efficiency: Beyond saving time, AI can bring in input from far more stakeholders, reach more people and break the once a year habit of translating strategy, so the message lands through repetition.
Align the C-suite before anything is translated: AI can map where executives' answers diverge before they walk into the room, but the vision belongs to a small leadership team that owns it, and the judgment calls stay with people.
Translate the impact, not the vision: What gets translated is what the strategy requires of each function in new ways of working. Teams act on it when it comes with measures and actions, and communicating is not the same as being understood.
Foundations come before AI: Process, data and knowledge maturity decide what AI can do for you. Structured systems of record and clear governance matter more than dropping documents into a model and asking it to track progress.
Listening needs trust and permission: AI can show where the strategy is not landing, but it can backfire if people feel watched and in many countries it is not allowed, so involve security and privacy early and keep humans in the loop.
What Comes Next
