Thursday Think Tank Session 20: Reading the Principles Horizontally | Change Management in Strategy Execution

Change Management Across the 10 Key Principles | Thursday, October 1, 2026
As StrategyXF's community works toward locking down Version 1 of its 10 Key Principles of Strategy Execution, Session 20 continued the horizontal pressure-test begun in Session 19, this time through the lens of change management, one of the five critical capabilities that cut across the whole operating system. The session was built around a featured walkthrough from member Nicholas Duval on how change management shows up in every principle, with members Hardeep Kaur and Ethan Schwaber invited to bring their own change management perspectives. What followed was a lively, practitioner-led exchange on whether change management is truly woven through the principles or mostly assumed.

Session Agenda
Opening Conversation. A short warm-up on AI and the enterprise operating model, and why the answer to AI governance keeps pointing back to how the organization is designed to operate.
Progress Update. Where the community stands on finalizing Principles 9 and 10, and what comes next with Principle 7 on financial management.
Change Management Across the 10 Principles. A walkthrough from Nicholas Duval of how three organizational conditions, control, capability and capacity, run through all ten principles and close the loop from strategic intent to realized value.
Community Discussion. An open exchange on change enablement versus change management, who owns the work, how early change needs to enter, where culture fits, and how to keep it lean.
"Change management is not there to help people cope with strategy execution. It's one of the disciplines that makes strategy executable." Nicholas Duval, on why change management is a strategic imperative and not a project activity
Key Takeaways
Change management is an organizational condition for execution, not a project activity. Nicholas Duval's lens asked what happens to each principle if the organization loses its ability to change. Control, capability and capacity gave the community a practical way to read all ten principles through change.
Go-live is not adoption, and adoption is not value. Training completion does not prove capability, and system usage does not prove outcomes. The chain from value intent through operational change to sustained results leads straight back to Principle 1, turning the ten principles into a closed loop.
Change needs to start earlier and connect across the principles. The community pushed to bring change in when strategy is first developed, not only in Principle 9. Members also challenged the Blueprints to show coverage and coherence, so change intelligence matures from one principle to the next instead of being a point-in-time assessment.
Specialists matter, but they can't be the only ones doing it. The group landed on real change expertise and clear ownership working together with broad participation, since people resist change forced on them far more than change itself. There was strong support for a lean, embedded capability and a strategic delivery expectation over another department.
Culture is an input to change, with realistic expectations. Culture shapes how change plans land, leadership buy-in is decisive, and complex change takes time, sometimes years. The community kept the scope on building a culture where people are motivated to execute strategy, not changing the culture of the whole enterprise.
