⛵ Perfect Alignment, Wrong Direction 🌊 - Strategic Alignment vs Execution Alignment
Watch that crew. Every oar hits the water at exactly the same moment, real strain, real synchronization, genuine effort from everyone in that boat. The cox is the only one who can actually see where they're headed, and she's still calling it "Perfect Alignment," cheerfully, into the roar of a waterfall she's staring directly at. The crew can't see it. They're facing the "Right Direction" banner shrinking behind them, rowing hard toward it, unaware the boat's already committed to a different destination entirely.
This is what happens when an organization builds a strong operating system and skips the harder question underneath it. A cohesive Strategy Execution operating system can deliver real alignment, everyone rowing together, synchronized, pulling hard in the same direction. But alignment on execution mechanics isn't alignment on destination. The boat ends up steering wrong for one of two reasons, either the strategy was never clearly defined in the first place, or it was defined well once and nobody adjusted course as internal or external conditions changed underneath it.Â
That's the core of Principle 3, Translate and Communicate Strategic Direction. It's not enough to build the muscle that moves the organization in sync, there has to be a clear, actionable North Star everyone's rowing toward, confirmed at every level and continuously retested as the world around it moves. The operating system can guarantee everyone pulls together. It can't guarantee they're pulling the right way unless the direction is unmistakably clear and kept current.
